Activities
At the Horseshu Hacienda ( on San Juan Island just outside of Friday Harbor ) we offer a horse program specifically for disabled riders, including the chance to safely groom one of our gentle horses or ponies. We will be happy to discuss your specific needs and set up a monthly, weekly or one-time program to accommodate your individual desires. Bring your camera - Get ready to smile!
Kayaking and Whale Watching Tours
We offer guided sea kayak tours from Lopez Island. We have the ability to offer an adaptive paddling experience for physically challenged people. We have also had many visually and hearing impaired people on our tours in the past. We have worked with World Team Sports, a nonprofit who offers outdoor adventures for disabled athletes. We have been the outfitter for their kayaking program for the past few years, taking people with a range of disabilities on multi-day kayaking adventures.

While we do have handicap passengers on our tours and we do welcome them, our boat probably isn't the best for wheelchairs. There are three steps up to the boat and a loading door that is not wide enough for a full sized wheel chair to fit through without being folded. Probably the best boat in Friday Harbor would be the Odessey, owned by San Juan Excursions.
Ivan Reiff Owner
Captain Western Prince Whale & Wildlife Tours
A person can be wheeled right up to the boat. Then they will need to be able to stand and walk up the steps, with assistance. We do not allow wheel chairs on deck, but there is plenty of seating.
San Juan Safaris Whale Watching Tours, Friday Harbor, San Juan Island
Events
The San Juan community Theater , Friday Harbor.
Access
The Theatre building and bathrooms are accessible to people with disabilities and other special needs. There are several designated parking spaces to the right of the Theatre’s main entrance, and a ramp for easy access to the building.
Both performance venues – the large Whittier Theatre and the smaller Gubelman Theatre – can accommodate patrons in wheelchairs. Because special seating is limited in both venues, patrons wanting to use this seating are encouraged to order their tickets early and to specify to the Box Office at the time they purchase tickets that they require special seating.
Hearing Impaired
Hearing impaired customers attending performances in the Whittier Theatre can us headsets that amplify the sound; these headsets are available free of charge at the box office.
The San Juan County Fair is held annually on the 3rd weekend of August (Aug 18-21, 2010). Nearly every aspect of the Fair is handicap accessible. The Main Exhibit Building has a concrete floor with full bathroom facilities. Several of the other exhibit buildings have concrete floors. There is a hard surface roadway from the Main gate that winds through the fairgrounds. Access to the buildings and barns from this road would be over packed dirt and gravel roads, paths or short, maintained grass. Most of the fairground is flat. We provide on grounds parking next to the Main Exhibit Building for vehicles with handicap tags and have an electric golf cart type vehicle to assist with movement around the grounds upon request. We will make every effort to help all fairgoers enjoy this excellent yearly event. For more information visit our website at www.sanjuancountyfair.org

Earthbox Motel ( On San Juan Island ) has one handicapped accessible room with a queen bed (WaterPlace) and walk-in shower in the bathroom. Our lobby has a ramp. We do have an indoor pool and hot tub, but to get into the pool or hot tub itself, you'll need to climb stairs.
Bird Rock Hotel ( On San Juan Island ) , our sister hotel, has a handicapped accessible suite. The Marrowstone. It has a king bed in the bedroom, a walk in shower in the bathroom, a living room and a private hot tub (need to climb stairs to get into hot tub). It's a gorgeous room. However, the room itself is not as roomy as the Water Place at Earthbox (hard to maneuver in a wheelchair). The lobby at Bird Rock has a step, no ramp (grandfathered in). Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Horseshu Hacienda ( on San Juan Island just outside of Friday Harbor ) is an ideal group or family accommodation / retreat for anyone – including someone who may have a mobility restriction. The living accommodations include a large deck, with wonderful views of the San Juan Valley – plus a Birds-eye view of the Working Ranch Grounds, including the horse riding arena and trail ride around the Ranch. Whether you prefer the inside, or being outside- you can sit comfortably, and enjoy the view, plus provide you with hours of real live entertainment. You will feel as though you are part of the Ranch Operation, and the daily activities. Our Ranch hands start each day at sun-up with feeding horses, to sun-down tucking each horse back in their barn stall. You can watch the guests ride, or 4-H Youth practice horseback riding skills.
The Hacienda is exceptionally well maintained, stocked with plenty of towels and linens, well appointed kitchen, and CLEAN. You will find tons of room to easily maneuver around, with the open and spacious floor plan. Each of the 3 bedrooms contains a comfortable Queen Size Bed plus an additional single size rollaway bed is tucked inside each bedroom closet. Everyone can have their own bed!
Please note: The Hacienda is not an “Official Handicap Establishment” as we do not have regulation handicap bars in the bathrooms / showers or any other rooms. Prior to entering the Hacienda you will find only a couple of nice wide stair steps. Once you enter, all is flat single level – including going outside on the deck. Our Friendly Ranch Staff is available 24hrs- and will gladly accommodate anyone requiring additional assistance.

Camp Moran Vacation House
Located in a forested setting, the quaint Camp Moran Vacation House is a great base from which to explore Moran State Park, Mount Constitution and Orcas Island. Moran State Park ADA Campsite
Site 12 at the South End Campground on Cascade Lake is reserved for ADA permitted campers only. The site has is paved and can accommodate a large RV or trailer up to 32 feet long. The site is adjacent to Cascade Lake and an ADA compliant restroom and shower facility. A picnic table and fire ring are also at the site. There are no utilities located at the site, but a dump station is available at the park. ADA eligible campers must present a valid ADA parking pass upon registration. Reservations are highly recommended during peak season, May 15 - Sept 15; all sites are first come, first serve in the off season. To make a reservation, please visit the Washingon State Parks website at www.parks.wa.gov or call 1-888-CAMPOUT.
Neither the gift shop or the summit of Mount Constitution are considered accessible by ADA standards. The gift shop has a few steps at the entrance. I have, however, seen people in "off-road" style wheelchairs (big tires) make it up the gravel trail to the look out area at the summit just fine. The good news is that the Friends of Moran are starting to remodel the old KVOS building at the summit and will be turning it into an interpretive center and gift shop. This will most likely be ADA accessible. Kari Due, OA3 Moran State Park moran@parks.wa.gov 360.376.2326 fax: 360.376.2360
Sucia Island
Sucia Island State Park has recently installed some ADA facilities out there too. You may want to contact them for more info: sucia.island@parks.wa.gov .
